MKA Upper School Lacrosse Players and Families:

Beginning Dec 2, we will play lacrosse indoors as a team at Turf City in Wayne NJ as we have in prior years.  All upper school lacrosse players are invited to sign up and participate in this interscholastic lacrosse league on Sundays for 10 weekends.  This is not mandatory but is a great time for kids to meet new and returning players, brush up on stick skills, and work off a little testosterone.  The surface is a turfed indoor hockey rink which plays 6 on 6.   John Fennelly and I will run the players through and keep the bench organized.  This is strictly games and not practice time.  MKA is the defending champion of the 2011-12 winter league.

Every player is required to be a member of US Lacrosse for insurance reasons and submit an individual player registration form.
See the Registration box on the website below for details but please send the completed forms to us so they can be submitted as a group to Courtney Turco to get a discount. US Lacrosse registration is online for those not members already. The cost is $300 per person for the 11 sessions which covers facilities, referees and pinnies. The checks should be made out to Jonathan Strain.

All,
I want to let you know that We are planning to have our team travel to Baltimore again this year for a spring training trip during our break in March. This is an optional trip, but everyone, including freshman, are encouraged to attend.
We practice, scrimmage, team bond, and take in some top level college games.
I'm still working out the details for trip and will send out the info when completed.
It will be very similar to past years.
We travel during the second week of Spring break.  The first week of spring break is reserved for family vacations, and as a result we do not practice or scrimmage during that week.
We typically leave for Baltimore on Saturday or Sunday and return on Wednesday evening.  We have scrimmages scheduled for Thursday and Saturday after we return.
I'll follow up shortly with more details.
Go Cougars!

Coach Edwards will like you all to be aware of the following:
Coaches,
The Face Off Clinic described below needs two more players. It will be a great event and I am sure that it will be well worth it for your face off players. Please pass information on to your players. Our first session is Sunday, October 21 so time is urgent for the sign ups to be completed. Have interested players and parents contact me at mwebster@pingry.org

Thanks,
Mike Webster
Cell 732-207-3920

Coaches and players,

I am working with Matt Schomburg to set up a series of off-season face off clinics. Matt is the premier face off instructor on Long Island and he will be offering in New Jersey a once a month clinic on Sunday mornings. Go towww.fogolax.net for more info on “Schommy”. Schommy works for STX and due to his work travel and his family commitments he can only commit to a two hour session once a month. IT WILL BE WELL WORTH IT!!!

He is limiting the number of players so that each player will get proper coaching. Each player will need to bring $50 each session. All participants are asked to attend all six sessions for a total of $300. All sessions will be at The Pingry School on the turf field and will start at 8am Sunday mornings. These sessions are for players who are making a serious commitment to improving. IT WILL BE WELL WORTH IT!!!

Dates are as follows: 10/21,  11/11,  12/9,  1/13,  2/10,  3/3. (8:00-10:00am) Light snow and cold will not stop the sessions.

If you have a player interested, please have them email me with their name, grade, email address and cell phone number so that I can set up Matt’s list.

Remember, there is a limit of participants so have your players reply ASAP. This will fill up quickly. IT WILL BE WELL WORTH IT!!!

Coach Edwards would like all of you to know the details for Al.  Flowers have been sent from the MKA lacrosse team to the funeral home.

Albert “Al” Rehus (1949 – 2012)

On Wednesday September 26, the Montclair Kimberley Academy community lost a very special member of our family as Albert “Al” Rehus, MKA’s Upper School Director of Security, passed away.

Al was a beloved son, husband, father, grandfather and friend to hundreds, if not thousands. MKA has lost a wonderful and genuine man who always brought a smile to peoples faces and who always put the needs of others before his own.  He was the rock upon which we all relied and was always there for us, whether we realized it or not.

Al loved MKA and the student athletes and coaches with whom he worked. Van Brunt Field and the Fairleigh S. Dickinson Jr. Gymnasium were his homes away from home and he made sure that they was ready for our student athletes each and every day. His impact on others went far beyond the classroom or the fields and although he is gone, he will never be forgotten.

From this point forward, the 2012 MKA Fall Athletic season is dedicated to our friend, Al Rehus.

Help needed for lacrosse clinics

Coaches/Players,

I’m reaching out to you regarding the lacrosse clinics that the Newark Public Schools host each year. We are looking for young men and women to volunteer their time teaching the game to boys and girls in Newark. We’ve done these clinics since the late 1990’s and have exposed the game to thousands of boys and girls from the city of Newark. If you would like to help or you have players that are interested in helping out and/or need to earn community service hours, this is a great opportunity for them. Over the years, we’ve had players and coaches from all over NJ come to help…which has been greatly appreciated by the Newark Public Schools.

The dates this year are July 10, 11, 12, 17, 18, 24, 25, 26, 31 & August 1. Clinics will be held at the Malcolm X. Shabazz Athletic Complex (80 Johnson Avenue) , just off of Exit 56 on Rt. 78.

Clinic times are from 2 PM to 6 PM, volunteers should arrive around 1:45 PM.

If you have any questions, feel free to email me or text/call me at 201-407-2762.

Thanks again in advance for your support.

To All New Jersey State Coaches & Players:

I wanted to invite all of you, your staffs, and your players to the Exhibition Game that the USA U-19 team will be playing on ..
Sunday July 1 at 3 pm. at Mountain Lakes.
The team we will be playing will be comprised of players from NJ who are starring on their college teams. Coaches for that team are Jim Davidson and Matt Kovachik. It should be a very competitve, fast and interesting contest. International rules allow for the dive and very quick restarts. Our game follows a U-15 All-Star Game at 12:30.
I am honored to represent the New Jersey coaching fraternity by working with this outstanding group of young men. It should be a great contest pitting the best of New Jersey against the best of the United States. The game serves as a fundraiser for the team.
Thank you for your help.
Tim Flynn

I have included the registration link which we will need either mailed or faxed to secure payment. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions you might have.

More Information on remembering Everett Glenn

7 May 2012
Dear Members of the MKA Community,
As I’m sure many of you are aware, this weekend brought us the tragic news that Everett Glenn, a beloved member of the Class of 2011, passed away while at Lafayette College.
There is perhaps nothing more terrible than a life cut off in its prime, and when that life is of a 19-year old who exemplified all that is best, not only in an MKA graduate, but also in the promise of a new generation, the community is left stunned, saddened and grappling for answers.

The Glenn family has been a part of the MKA community for many years – Everett’s parents, Joanne and Leonard, and brothers, Chris ’03 and Darryn ’04, are known to legions of our families and alumni, and the strength that they are showing in this darkest time can perhaps serve as inspiration to us all.

In informing MKA of the service arrangements (see below) Joanne wrote the following: “We will truly appreciate continuous prayers. But we trust our faith will sustain us. God Bless.”

For those of you who wish to pay your respects in person, the viewing will be on Saturday, May 12 at 11:00 a.m. at Church of the Epiphany,
105 Main Street in Orange. The funeral will follow immediately thereafter.
For those of you who wish to convey your condolences in writing, the family’s address is:
140 Hepburn Road Apt 19E
Clifton, NJ 07012
Please know that we are providing our students and faculty with the support of counseling professionals at this most difficult time. It has been my experience that tragic times bring out the very best in our MKA community. I know you share with me in sending our thoughts and prayers to the Glenn family, and I also know that a life that shone as brightly as Everett’s will never be forgotten here at MKA.

In addition, please take a moment to visit the 'Remembering Everett'
website to view or
share a photo or memory of Everett.

Regards,

Thomas W. Nammack

MKA Mourns Loss of Young Alum

MKA Mourns Loss of Young Alum

It is with profound sadness that MKA learned the tragic news yesterday of the passing of Everett Glenn, Class of 2011. Glenn, a freshman at Lafayette College, was one of the most respected members of his class, and had been an exemplar of the character standards that MKA students strive to live by.

An accomplished epee fencer, Glenn was named team captain as a junior, a rare honor and testament to his ability to be a role model to his teammates – as evidenced when he contested a crucial touch he believed to have been mistakenly declared in his favor at the State Championships, (which he then went on to win.)
A natural leader at school as well as on the strip, Glenn was compassionate, warm, loyal and loveable; popular, warm-hearted and unfailingly kind. A Peer Leader, a House Captain, a member of the Mastersingers and an Eagle Scout, his presence enriched the lives of all who knew him.

The entire MKA community extends their love, support and condolences to the Glenn family – parents Joanne and Leonard, and brothers Chris, MKA Class of ’03 and Darryn, ‘MKA Class of 04. Information on service arrangements will be posted as soon as it becomes available.

Everett was a member of our 2011 Lacrosse team. A beloved teammate and a terrific young man. He will be sorely missed.
